NEW THIS YEAR

Summer STAY Camps

2020 is a unique year - and we want to continue providing unique learning opportunities for kids and for entire families! Join kids of all ages from all around the state in an encouraging and collaborative environment for some summer learning you'll never forget.

What Are Summer Stay Camps?

Summer Stay Camps get kids of all ages playing and exploring outdoors!  Stay Camps will help keep your kids active and engaged in investigating, experimenting, and expressing creativity in a connected and collaborative environment through safe and exciting at home activities. These are not “virtual” or “online” summer camps, although there will be live, person to person engagement through the internet. Stay Camps are filled hands on child-led educational activities in which kids participate as a part of a state-wide community.

Summer Stay Camps include Jr. Explorer camps (Pre-K though 1st grade), Explorer camps (2nd-12th grade), and Evening Family Camps for all ages to participate together as a family. Each of these camps will include live facilitation through Zoom video meetings with a staff moderated chatroom, a camper notebook to guide kids in the inquiry process, and a parent packet to help make it as easy for parents as possible.  Additionally, every camp participant will be invited to join in for an exciting virtual lunch time with all Stay Campers each day at 11:30. For an example of how a day at Stay Camps is run, view a sample schedule HERE.

What is included with Summer Stay Camps?

Zoom Video Lessons allow discussion, collaboration, and community to germinate and grow within each camp group to form lasting camper friendships! This way, campers can form a personal connection with their camp guide and fellow curiositeers. The camp guide will be available whenever they are needed to assist, encourage, and support campers through the chatroom! Campers can also share ideas, suggestions, encouragements and accomplishments with each other through the chat.

Camper Notebooks provide everything the child needs to fully engage in each at-home activity. The notebook guides kids through fun facts, activity 'how-tos', and reflective questions to drive home learning and engagement for every camp activity! Simply download, print, fold, and bind the notebook with basic household materials to create a record and keepsake that campers can cherish from their experiences with the Stay Camps! View a sample Camper Notebook HERE.

Parent Packets provide everything a parent needs and wants to know about the activities of the stay camp! Parent packets will clearly show what materials, space, and time are recommended. We'll tell you when your child will have outdoor activities, and which activities are more likely to be a bit messy. For parents busy working from home or caring for other children, the parent packet will help make the child’s experience as engaging as it is intended to be with minimal parent involvement as is age appropriate for the child. For parents who have more time and wish to be more involved, it will provide some options for how parents can participate in camp facilitation with their campers. View a sample Parent Packet HERE.

Virtual Lunches will occur at 11:30 each weekday of the summer and will be available only for Stay Camp campers. It offers exclusive content for all ages on theme with the camps of that week. Stay Camp Virtual Lunches are an opportunity to see behind the scenes at our venues, learn from experts in the field, and engage in content created by our very own Stay Camp community!

What Are the Themes?

Each week, all ages of Explorers and Jr. Explorers will be focused on the same theme. Siblings who are involved in stay camp on the same week can participate together in some of the same activities, even if they are different ages.

Frequently Asked Questions

You will need a device for the Zoom calls. Campers can participate easily on a computer, phone, or tablet. Thanksgiving Point will provide digital resources (Camper Notebook and/or Parent Packet) to facilitate the experience. All other materials will be simple, inexpensive, and easy to acquire. You may be surprised the things that can be done with a few simple materials. A comprehensive materials list will be provided for each camp about 3 weeks prior to the start date of camp. Our creative camp guides can help individuals make adaptations for activities if materials cannot be acquired.

For Jr. Explorer camps, video calls consist of experienced facilitators, guiding young children through activities with their parents. They will include singing songs, telling stories, group sharing and more.

For Explorer camps intro video calls will be there to help each participant get on track in the morning. Camp guides will explain the day’s activities, answer questions, and encourage campers to try their best and share their experiences. End-of-day debrief calls will primarily consist of the camp guide leading discussion about the experiences of the day and encouraging reflection that leads to learning.

For Evening family camps, video calls will be more webinar style, where the camp guide presents an engaging lesson and engages families through chat and well managed family input.

We believe that summer camps should be active and outdoor as much as possible and stay camps should be no exception. We are using the digital platforms as little as possible while still providing a space for community, collaboration, and individual support. That being said, parents can expect around one hour of screen time per day total.

This will depend greatly on the age of your child. We are designing camps to require minimal parent involvement, with comprehensive notebooks and constant camp guide support. Jr. Explorer camps will rely somewhat heavily on parent facilitation, while Explorer camps rely on parent for providing materials and space for activities. We hope that parents of older children working from home or busy with other children can supervise their child for safety, while trusting their learning and engagement to our staff and activity guide.

Thanksgiving Point is committed to creating a positive experience for all children including Summer Stay Camps. New this year, we have a professional inclusion support team who can provide varying levels of assistance to children, based on the camper's need and the inclusion team's availability. Please call Max Whitson, Summer Camp Coordinator (801.768.4994) to learn more or to request support.
